Alberta remembers Jack Layton
August 29, 2011
Following an overwhelming outpouring of sympathies and condolences, Alberta's NDP and Alberta NDP MP Linda Duncan will host a public candlelight vigil in Jack Layton's memory on Wednesday, August 24th at 7:30pm on the front steps of the Alberta Legislature. All Albertans are invited to attend, pay their respects and celebrate the contributions of this great Canadian leader. Speakers will include Raj Pannu, former leader of Alberta's NDP, Edmonton-Strathcona MP Linda Duncan, and Alberta's NDP leader Brian Mason.
In Calgary, New Democrats are gathering to celebrate and remember Jack this Thursday, August 25th at the 4th Spot Bar at 2620 4th Street NW starting at 8PM.
"This morning, Alberta NDP Leader Brian Mason reflected on Jack's contributions to the party, to the country and to the social democratic movement: All Canadians mourn the loss of Jack Layton. He impressed Canadians with his courage, his fighting spirit and his humour in the face of adversity."
"He was an inspiration to all who believe in a more just, open and equitable society. He embodied hope for meaningful and progressive political change in Canada. He showed us that it was possible."
"New Democrats will not let that dream die. Jack built a strong movement for change. He built a strong party with great depth. We will continue on the quest for a better Alberta, a better Canada, a better world. We will fulfill Jack's mission."
"On behalf of all Alberta New Democrats I wish to express my condolences to Olivia and all of Jack's family. Thank you."
