Mason raises point of privilege against Redford PCs for their legislating by exhaustion
For immediate release | December 01, 2011
Alberta’s NDP Opposition leader Brian Mason will raise a point of privilege against the Redford PC government for their decision to legislate by exhaustion.
MLA privileges are violated when someone directly interferes in an MLA’s ability to do his or her job.
“This extremely short session, with end-to-end night sittings, prevents opposition from doing proper research on bills or consulting with public stakeholders to make sure all Albertans’ views are properly represented,” Mason says. “Premier Redford has dodged accountability to the public by allowing fewer question periods and less time for the public to react to legislation.
“Given Ms. Redford promised more transparency and accountability during her leadership campaign, this is yet another broken promise. This is not the kind of government Albertans deserve.”
