On June 22, 2024, Naheed Nenshi was selected as leader of the Alberta New Democrats.
One year later he was elected as the MLA for Edmonton-Strathcona, the third Alberta New Democrat leader to represent the riding.
Naheed believes better is possible for Alberta. Alongside his fellow Alberta’s New Democrats MLAs, he is working to make the province a place where everyone can thrive.
Before provincial politics, Naheed served three terms as Mayor of Calgary from 2010 to 2021. His leadership guided the city in unprecedented investment in quality of life including transit, roads, recreation centers and libraries. He also saw Calgary through four states of emergency, including devastating floods in 2013 and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Naheed was named the best mayor in the world in 2014 and Calgary was also listed as the third best city to live in globally while he was in office.
Naheed re-entered political life in 2024 to run for the Alberta’s New Democrats party leadership, winning with 86% of the vote. The following year, he received 89.5% support in a leadership review vote.
Naheed is proud to usher the party into a new era of growth and opportunity.
Beyond elected office, Naheed has built a distinguished career as a business consultant on global projects ranging from infrastructure to corporate strategy. He also taught business, marketing and management at Mount Royal University.
