Brooks Arcand-Paul carries cultural responsibility and community advocacy into everything he does. Known by his nehiyaw name sîpîysis, Little River, Brooks was raised on Alexander First Nation and is a direct descendant of catchistahwayskum, a nehiyaw leader who signed Treaty 6 at Fort Edmonton in 1877. He is nehiyaw, a proud Two Spirit leader, and the first Two Spirit MLA elected in Alberta.
Before being elected MLA for Edmonton-West Henday in 2023, Brooks served as legal counsel for Alexander First Nation and practiced Indigenous, employment, and commercial law as a litigator. He spent years with the Indigenous Bar Association, including as vice president.
As Shadow Minister for Indigenous Relations, Brooks introduced the Reconciliation Implementation Act and has held the government to account on treaty relationships, the duty to consult, public education, and accessible health care. Albertans in Edmonton-West Henday and across the province deserve a government that keeps its word.
Brooks is ready. Alberta's New Democrats are ready.
