CALGARY — Alberta’s public health care system has never been in worse shape. After seven years of UCP chaos, mismanagement, corruption and privatization, Alberta's NDP are releasing the first look at the Future of Health Care: a plan to transform health care so that Albertans can get care when they need it. 

This project is the result of two years of consultations led by Calgary-Varsity MLA, Dr. Luanne Metz, a world-renowned neurologist who cut wait times by 40 per cent when she was head of Neurology in Calgary. 

“We don’t need to tell Albertans that over the last seven years, the UCP government has broken health care. They see it and experience it every day when they try to see a doctor, go to the emergency room, call an ambulance, or try to get surgery.” said leader of the Alberta NDP, Naheed Nenshi. 

“The Alberta NDP believes in a future where every Albertan can get the public care they need, when they need it.” continued Nenshi. “A future where a strong public health care system delivers world-class care, supports health care workers, and works seamlessly across the province.”

Within three years, an Alberta NDP government will deliver a health care system that Albertans can count on. Under the Future of Health Care, Albertans can expect:

• Shorter emergency department wait times.
• An ambulance when they call 911.
• Surgical, diagnostic, and specialist wait times cut by 30 per cent within three years.
• Access to a family doctor or primary care provider for every Albertan.
• One Ministry of Health.

Alberta's NDP will deliver these commitments by rebuilding trust, strengthening the health care workforce, and integrating care across the province. That means increasing transparency and accountability, including upholding the Canada Health Act and launching a public inquiry into CorruptCare, recruiting, training, and retaining the health care professionals Alberta needs while ending the UCP's destructive privatization agenda, and creating one connected health care system that is easier for Albertans to access and navigate.

"Delivering on these commitments will not happen overnight," said Dr. Luanne Metz, Chair of the Future of Health Care. "Years of UCP cuts, chaos, confusion, and cruelty have left Alberta's health care system more fragmented, less accountable, and harder to access. But Alberta's NDP is ready to begin the work of transforming health care so Albertans get the care they need, when they need it."

Alberta’s NDP will unveil more policy commitments in the coming months to add to the Future of Health Care.
