CALGARY — Today, Naheed Nenshi, Leader of Alberta’s New Democrats, announced a first look at the Alberta NDP’s economic vision for Alberta.
After seven years of stagnating wages and rising costs, wasteful government spending and mismanagement, the Alberta NDP’s plan for the economy will be focused on three key pillars:
- Creating good jobs now and in the future
- Restoring responsible government
- Ensuring all Albertans share in our province’s economic success
“Our plan is all about jobs-driven economic growth, being a government that provides stability to investors and spends public money responsibly, and ensuring all Albertans can share in our economic success,” said Nenshi. “Our economic vision for Alberta is one where people can build a career, grow a business, and confidently plan for the future.”
Jobs-driven economic growth
Helping Albertans earn more by investing in skills and training, supporting businesses to grow, and making sure that growth leads to better-paying jobs. This includes attracting jobs and investment to Alberta through a head office strategy, building a more resilient economy by strengthening key industries like energy, while expanding sectors such as technology, value-added agriculture, and professional services.
Responsible government
Creating a stable, predictable environment where businesses feel confident investing and growing in Alberta, while being responsible with public money. This means being resolute in being pro-Canada and anti-separatism, not flip-flopping on policies like coal mining which has resulted in hundreds of millions of dollars wasted, focusing spending on what actually works, and making sure government is living within its means by balancing the operating budget during the business cycle.
Shared prosperity
Ensuring all Albertans share in the province’s success — from entrepreneurs and workers to those struggling to make ends meet — by supporting small businesses, improving access to opportunity, and taking a comprehensive approach to poverty reduction. This means increasing the minimum wage predictably, investing in public services that are the backbone of economic growth, tackling the cost-of-living crisis, and supporting those looking for new pathways into the workforce.
More details on the Alberta NDP’s economic plans will be shared in the coming weeks alongside other policy announcements. While this economic strategy charts a path for Alberta’s long-term growth, Alberta’s New Democrats have also released the Alberta Affordability Agenda — a plan that would deliver immediate relief to families struggling with the rising cost of living.
