The Alberta NDP is committed to providing high-quality education to all students across the province, which includes making sure Francophone education is widely available.
Part of our plan includes the construction and modernization of Francophone schools.
At the beginning of the pandemic, when students, teachers, and parents most needed assistance, the UCP laid off 20,000 educational assistants and school staff. They cut student funding and supports at a time when we needed them most and over the last two years have underspent the education budget by $1 billion.
Working with Francophone school boards in Alberta, we will ensure funding is sufficient to provide high-quality and equivalent Francophone education close to home for students across the province, and so that school boards are able to hire the necessary teachers, support staff, and educational assistants.
This includes providing stable, sustainable multi-year funding to the Campus Saint-Jean and invite Francophone youth to take part in the Alberta Future Leaders’ Council, which will provide advice on how to attract and keep youth in Alberta.
We are committed to working with Francophone communities to increase services under the Canada-Alberta Agreement on French-Language Services, for example, for increased access to settlement and newcomer support for Francophones.
Francophone communities are also eligible for the Alberta NDP’s Hometown Alberta program to build, repair, renovate, upgrade or expand local community facilities, including sports, recreational, cultural, and other public-use spaces.
