Our plan A Better Welcome For New Albertans, prioritizes the resources newcomers need to feel welcomed, find meaningful work, and build a life in Alberta.

In 2019, the UCP established important goals around fair, transparent, and accessible immigration, settlement, and recognizing foreign credentials. But they didn’t go far enough. Right now Alberta’s newcomer strategy is lacking timelines on transparency and reporting.

A Better Welcome commits to updating and improving the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program by creating specific pathways to express entry that prioritize skills and credentials in high demand.

Pathways to Alberta

• Revamp the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) to create faster access for target skilled workers, healthcare workers, and international students educated in Alberta and Canada.
• Create a streamlined dashboard to provide clear information for everyone.
• In healthcare, increase the eligibility and access to medical residencies for Internationally-trained Medical Graduates

Pathways to Work

• Improve foreign credential recognition by regulating timelines and striking a six-month Credentialing and Immigration Task Force.
• Increase access to low-interest financing and grants for credential upgrading.
• Enhance the Fairness for Newcomers Office to ensure transparency and fairness in regulated professions.

Pathways to Community

• Significantly increase supports and eligibility for all settlement services, including language training, education, credentialing, and employment, support resource hubs and community navigators to help match people to necessary services.
• Engage the federal government to fund these services fully.
• Develop an inclusive K-12 curriculum that reflects Alberta's diverse population.
