Access to quality, affordable child care is essential to families, to the early learning of children and to the economy.
The Alberta NDP was the first government in the province to bring in a program for affordable, quality and accessible child care for working parents. Our commitment to this has never wavered.
In 2021, the UCP cancelled that first affordable child care pilot program, doubling the cost of child care fees for thousands of Alberta parents. The UCP then only reluctantly signed on to the deal for billions in child care funding from the federal government after Albertans spoke out.
Since then, the implementation of that deal has been deeply problematic for child care providers and parents are stuck on long waitlists.
Rachel Notley and the Alberta NDP will bring your family $10/day childcare faster.
The Alberta NDP will create more affordable child care spaces so families can access child care in their communities. We will not wait until 2026 to bring fees down to $10/day. We will do it by the end of 2024.
And we will ensure parents using before and after school care will also benefit from $10/day child care.
We will make sure Alberta families can access $10/day childcare by the end of 2024 - INCLUDING after school care.
The UCP committed to creating 10,000 new non-profit child care spaces in 2022. Instead they only created 4500 spaces - less than half of what was promised. This is because they failed to fund space creation adequately.
We will double the per space funding grant to non-profit child care operators to create more child care spaces from $5,000/space to $10,000/space.
The Alberta NDP's incremental increase to the base grant will help us actually build the spaces needed to meet the demand of working parents.
Having access to affordable, quality childcare faster will mean more money in your pocket and better outcomes for families and children.
