The impacts of climate change are undeniable. Across the world and in Alberta we must do more to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
We will create made-in-Alberta policies and approaches that support economic growth and a healthy environment, that provide global markets and investors certainty that our environmental targets are ambitious and achievable.
Governments around the world should aim to keep the average increase in global temperatures below 1.5 degree Celsius.
So how will we get there?
The Alberta NDP will provide incentives for game-changing technologies like hydrogen hubs, CCUS, and energy storage to reduce emissions and drive long-term investment and jobs.
Our Alberta’s Future Tax Credit provides a 20 to 30 per cent capital incentive in emerging sectors for low-emissions projects that create good jobs, such as in the area of bitumen beyond combustion.
We will also fund equipment and deployable technologies through a $75 million investment in Methane Emissions Capture and Reduction Fund delivered by Emissions Reduction Alberta.
The Alberta NDP will support Alberta innovators and businesses to develop, deploy and then export their technologies and services by establishing the Alberta Export Development Program.
And we will report annually to Albertans on progress and emissions reductions.
We will also develop an adaptation plan and report back to Albertans on the necessary investments required. We will bring in provincial infrastructure adaptation guidelines and carefully review Alberta’s capital budget to ensure our province has an appropriate adaptation strategy.
Through Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA), we will provide direct and significant support to communities across Alberta, to farmers, agri-business, forestry, and to small-and-medium sized businesses with a solid plan to increase energy savings.
We’ll support conservation partnerships and programs for natural carbon sequestration – in wetlands, native grasses, agricultural lands, rangelands, muskeg, and forests.
